Commissioning Process Analysis

When Commissioning DOESN’t GO AS Expected

We much prefer when commissioning is properly planned and executed for successful project outcomes. But this isn’t always the case.

When projects go wrong, we provide analysis of the commissioning process and the decisions made that negatively impact the outcome of projects, particularly related to mechanical, electrical, and automation protection and control systems, as well as the commissioning process required to integrate these subsystems.

Today’s projects are complex and can end in a nightmare if commissioning is not forefront of everyone’s mind starting at the beginning of projects. However, the industry-norm is to leave commissioning to the end of projects.

When this occurs, it’s usually easy to see what was overlooked earlier in projects that would have prevented commissioning from going badly and the project resulting in delays and cost-overruns.

This is what we specialize in – managing risks during all phases of projects so that the commissioning phase is set up for success. And when this doesn’t occur, we help break it down to see what went wrong for claims resolution.

Types of Commissioning

There are two broad types of commissioning:

  • Commercial Building Commissioning
  • Industrial Plant Commissioning

We specialize in the commissioning of complex industrial plant processes – oil & gas facilities, power systems, water and wastewater treatment plants, manufacturing facilities, food processing plants – any complex industrial plant process requiring an integrated commissioning plan to verify system acceptance.

Project Completions

There are several decisions made earlier in projects that impact the success of commissioning. This involves:

  • Providing input to major contract procurement processes to ensure commissioning requirements and standards are identified upfront, and that initial project initiation processes align with how the project will be completed during the commissioning
  • Identifying potential pitfalls during design and procurement stages that add cost and risk during later stages of commissioning
  • Establishing the required quality management systems during construction to ensure contract non-conformances are not deferred to commissioning
  • Helping construction and commissioning teams establish effective Static Completion methods for efficient handovers from one group to the other
  • Developing integrated construction/commissioning schedules to align with the project startup sequence
  • Working with commissioning teams to develop Project Commissioning Plans
  • Ensuring operational readiness processes are in place to support a smooth handover from the project team to the operations team, plus much more

But this doesn’t always occur on projects. And when it doesn’t, we help sort through the details to analyze what went wrong.
