So you are interested in learning about commissioning.

That’s great! Becoming involved in commissioning is a great career choice – it has been extremely rewarding for me in my career.

But commissioning can be complex? Where do you begin to start learning?  How do you know what activities take place during each stage of the project? And how do you ensure you are learning the best methods to commission your projects?

You have 3 choices when it comes to learning the commissioning and startup process.

On-the-Job Training

Since training options are limited when it comes to specialized training like commissioning, many people must learn-as-they-go by joining a project and learning from the experience of others on the commissioning team.  This is a great way to get valuable hands-on experience, but comes with two challenges:

  • On-the-job training can take a long time to gain the knowledge you are looking for, especially for specialized topics like commissioning. Since the commissioning of projects can take many months or years, it can take quite a while to see the complete process from start to finish in order to understand all the steps of commissioning.
  • How do you know you are learning the industry-best commissioning method that is the standard lowest risk approach in the industry? Just because one project performs commissioning in one way doesn’t mean that another project will perform commissioning the same – a completely differently commissioning process might be followed on your next project.  And you will only know if one method was better than the other at the end of each project once you have determined if the project is completed on-time and on-budget.  This can take years to learn.

Don’t get me wrong – on-site commissioning experience is necessary for continuous learning to further refine your skillsets and advance your career.  But there are more established training methods to get you started prior to accepting your first role at the site.  The best is to have a solid understanding of the commissioning process before arriving at the site to help you maximize your on-site learning opportunities.

Self-Learning

To learn the basics of commissioning, you can spend some time with Google to search for the information that is available and read about it.  This comes with some challenges as well:

  • You will spend half of your time searching for the information instead of reading and learning the information. There is not a lot of commissioning information online and specific topics can be hard to find.  When you do find some information, it does not present all aspects to consider.
  • How do you know that the information you have found follows industry best-practices? One individual may have learned a commissioning process from several decades ago that no longer applies to today’s complex projects.
  • How do you know what to look for when you are just starting out learning about commissioning? What do you search for in Google?  What specific topics do you need to make sure you review?  And how do you know that you haven’t missed something important in the process?

Self-learning is an even longer process than on-the-job training.  It is not a reliable method to gain the expert knowledge required for commissioning. While searching online is a good place to start when learning about commissioning, you will need a more in-depth and comprehensive resource to gain the knowledge you are looking for.

Online Training

Learning the commissioning process requires detailed training.  Commissioning training is very specialized and cannot always be found in your area.  There may be classroom training sessions that are offered, but these are often in a different city or country than where you are located.  Classroom training requires travel to the location where the training will be held.  With the cost of travel and accommodations on top of the cost of the course, this may not be practical.

A better option is online training.  Online commissioning training provides you with specialized knowledge that you cannot find in a school or a classroom.  Online training gives you the expertise you are looking for to learn the commissioning process that you cannot find elsewhere.  There are several benefits to online commissioning training:

  • Learn the commissioning process from the comfort of your home. No need to travel to another city or country to obtain the knowledge you need to succeed at commissioning your projects.
  • The cost of online training is much cheaper than travel and accommodation expenses.
  • Learn at your own pace. You can take all parts of the training immediately or follow the information at a slower pace to absorb all the valuable information.  Study the downloadable resources and ensure you have mastered each topic before moving on to the next.
  • Find the expert knowledge you need. Online training gives you the expertise that you cannot find elsewhere and is not taught in school.
  • Learn from someone who has been involved in commissioning for decades. Learn from the success and failures in order to ensure you are learning industry-best practices for commissioning your projects.
  • All information is consolidated into one learning package. You do not need to spend hours searching for bits and pieces of information – all the necessary topics are covered in a one-stop-shop.  You won’t miss any of the important topics since everything that you need to know is presented in one place.
  • Gain all the knowledge in a short time. By following the material, you will be able to understand all parts of the commissioning process in a condensed manner.

Online training is a great place to start to learn about the commissioning process.  Having a fundamental understanding of all the parts of commissioning will allow you to learn so much more when you get to the site to continue learning.  Rather than asking basic questions of the commissioning experts at site, you will be able to have much more engaging discussions to continue learning.
