You can’t teach a kid to ride a bike in a seminar – he/she needs to get on the bike and get the bumps and bruises to figure it out.
The same applies to commissioning – you can’t learn commissioning from a book or a course – you need to get out there and get the experience required to become great at commissioning.
When a kid first learns to ride a bike, there are a few things they need to be aware of first – how the pedals work, how the brakes work, how to steer, etc.
Commissioning is the same – it’s a complex topic, and there is fundamental information that EVERYONE working on projects needs to understand in order to be able to successfully complete projects during commissioning and startup.
However, there seems to be a lot of resistance in the commissioning industry with sharing information to help others understand. Everyone is busy and doesn’t have time to share. There are two types of people:
- The old jaded commissioning experts that are unwilling to share their knowledge and help others understand commissioning.
- The wise commissioning experts that are excited to help others understand and are patient to spend their time passing their knowledge to others.
Which one are you?
I’ve worked with both types of people. Some of the smartest, most stimulating, and most exciting people I’ve worked with are the wise commissioning experts that are thrilled to share their information and help others understand the complexities of commissioning.
Then, there are the old miserable guys that are mad at the world. They complain that nobody understands commissioning, but then get mad when people ask questions or want to learn. Unfortunately, this approach is what has kept the commissioning industry stuck for decades.
And the commissioning industry will continue to stay stuck unless we collectively help EVERYONE working on projects understand the importance of commissioning and the benefits it provides to projects.
The tools haven’t been available to us in the past, but the Internet has grown significantly in the past decades, and gives us the powerful tools to get the right information into the right hands of people working on projects.
For those working on projects (project managers, design groups, construction leads, anyone new to commissioning) that needs to understand the fundamentals of commissioning – the tools to use and the processes to follow to successfully complete projects – they would benefit from enrolling in our Fundamentals of Commissioning Management course. Again, this is not going to make anyone a commissioning expert. But these commissioning fundamentals are what is required to lay a solid foundation for everyone to understand how their role feeds into commissioning to make the project successful.
Getting commissioning information in the hands of others that would benefit from an understanding of the commissioning fundamentals, helps EVERYONE understand the importance of commissioning and the value it provides to projects.
The tools now exist to share this commissioning information with everyone:
Sign up and see how these resources help you and your project team understand the importance of commissioning and how it benefits projects:
- Share these with others that need to understand more about commissioning
- Or, let me know what’s missing from these resources that others on your project should understand, and I’ll get it added
The only way the commissioning industry becomes unstuck is when we share information with EVERYONE working on projects to help them understand commissioning. It’s not their fault that they don’t understand – commissioning is complex, and it’s not something that can be explained in 10 minutes. But with the right tools to share information with others, we can help the commissioning industry become unstuck and achieve better project outcomes, one person and one project at a time.
The choice is yours, do you want to be part of the problem or part of the solution?
