The same problems have plagued the construction and commissioning industry for decades:
- Commissioning is squeezed at the end of projects to fix everyone else’s mistakes in half the time
- Commissioning is not included in earlier phases of the project
- Commissioning is an after-thought and a scramble to complete at the end of projects
We’ve heard the same issues for a long time, and nothing seems to get any better. And it’s not anyone’s fault – commissioning is complex, and it’s not an easy topic to explain to someone in 10 minutes.
But the time has come that we must help the industry understand the importance of commissioning and the value it provides to projects. Projects continue to get more and more complex, and commissioning is now more than ever a crucial part of projects to integrate many more interconnected systems.
The only way to educate the industry is by getting the right information in the hands of the right people, to simplify the complexity of commissioning so they can understand the fundamentals of what is required to successfully complete the commissioning and startup of projects. If you know of another way, please let me know, but the only way I am aware of is information to help people better understand commissioning.
Everyone working on projects needs to understand the fundamentals of commissioning. This includes project managers, project sponsors, project executive, project owners, engineering design groups, purchasing departments, consultants, construction leads, quality leads, site inspectors, vendors, manufacturers, cost & schedule groups, project support groups – anyone that is contributing to the project to achieve the end-goal to meet the project in-service date on-time and on-budget.
We don’t need to make these people commissioning experts – that’s the role of the commissioning team, to understand all the details of commissioning and perform complex testing. All other groups working on projects don’t need to understand the details of how to do loop checks or how to perform current injections. But they do need to understand the stages of commissioning, what takes place during each stage, and why these steps are required for successful project outcomes.
It is not possible to complete projects on-time and on-budget when only the core commissioning group understands how to successfully complete projects. Everyone working on projects must understand how their role contributes to the success of the project. And because commissioning is a complex topic, most people have only a limited understanding of commissioning, if at all.
So it is time for the rise of commissioning. We need to educate everyone working on projects about the importance of commissioning and the value it provides to projects. Everyone working on projects needs to understand the fundamentals of commissioning. And you can get the fundamentals of commissioning right here.
Be part of the rise of commissioning for better project outcomes.
